Dispute :-
• In 2017, Rawat's
remarks against stone pelters in Kashmir created an uproar. His comment was:
“Actually, I wish these people were firing weapons at us instead of throwing
stones at us. Then I would have been happy. Then I could do what I (wanted to
do)."
• Rawat has been
criticized by veterans of the Indian Army for his suggestion that there should
be a code of conduct governing retired soldiers. However, the Army Headquarters
had suggested that it did not support any such code of conduct.
• During an interview
when she was asked about the roles women played during the war, she made a
controversial statement. She said that women in combat roles could complain
about men peeping into their tents while changing. He said, "She'll say
someone is peeping, so we have to put a sheet around her."
• In 2017, he was
criticized for awarding the Chief of Army Staff's Citation to Major Leetul
Gogoi for "sustained efforts" in counter-insurgency operations. Gogoi
made headlines in 2017 for tying a Kashmiri civilian to the front of his jeep.
The move was apparently done in an attempt to prevent stone pelters from
targeting his convoy.
• In December 2018, his
opinion regarding disability pension also raised controversy. He warned
soldiers who describe themselves as 'disabled' and want to earn extra money
through disability pension. He said, "If a soldier is really disabled, we
will give him special attention and help him in every way, even financially.
• In December 2019, he sparked a controversy by publicly condemning the violent protests related to anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in India, saying that leadership is not about guiding people to commit arson and violence Was. The general also came down heavily on opposition leaders and senior retired officers.
